The City needs better streets

We have not decent parks! The only park is too small and is only for little children. There is not open space for older students to play ball or even toss a frisbee. The only place for older students is at the school. We have no basketball courts or sand volleyball courts. If we didn't have our school property, there would be nothing for older students. Also there is not an adequate walking track and the one small park. The school lets the community use their track, but that is not good for a running track to allow walkers on it. It would be nice if our city would build a decent track. It would also be nice to have curbs on the streets and better streets. We are notorious for our bad streets!

I would like to see a full-time doctor here in Devine. It must be a hardship for some who can't afford to drive to Hondo or Castroville or San Antonio but really need to see a doctor.

Better public recreation facilities such as a complex with pools, multiple tennis courts, pavilions, playground, picnic areas. We need to expand the Community center and it needs to be updated or spruced up a bit. Evaluate how often it is utilized and, if needed, make it more access able to more citizens. But one of the biggest needs is an overall cleaning and beautification of our town. Devine looks dull and unwelcoming. Devine is a friendly, nice community, but it looks tired and old. A community effort is needed to get things cleaned up- businesses, city, and citizens! The downtown Four Corners are nice, but they could be upgraded and really set the tone for what our town can look like. First of all, we need a town sign downtown. Something permanent, not a wooden sign that fades and peels. We pride ourselves in encouraging small businesses, then why not invite and encourage more of them to fill the vacant buildings. Then promote our town of small businesses to bring in visitors.

Need to have streets paved and curbed and clean up the town. Need either a Wal Mart or HEB for shopping convenience and keep dollars local. Need to build a Park Facility complete with Baseball Fields, Soccer Fields, Tennis Courts, Walking Trails, etc. Devine really needs to expand their utilities to the other side of IH 35 so the city can grow and improve even if it means increasing taxes. Maybe a Economic Development Committee could get the city moving.

More and more diverse commercial/retail. I have to drive to Hondo to get access to different types of restaurants. Also believe we need bigger retail, such as a Walmart. Money is leaving the community. Also, need more family entertainment options.

Additional areas that need adressing are poor street quality and drainage issues (you have to drive through 8-10 inches of water at the four corners anytime it rains).

More activities for the kids - bowling alley, laser tag, place they could hang out with their friends for hours at a time without getting in trouble or asked to leave

An environment geared toward children of all ages. We go into San Antonio for what? Entertainment, dining, fun, etc...
Let's have a movie theater, Mcdonalds WITH a playroom, Peter Pipers Pizza WITH a playroom, Chuckie Cheese WITH a playroom, Chick fil a WITH a playarea, Ceci's WITH a playarea, Bowling ring, Miniature golf. Stuff geared for ALL ages would be nice, actually it would be AWESOME! Let's get a supercenter over here. Lytle has H.E.B., Hondo has Walmart, so Devine should also get one of those. Maybe Target. We can stay a small town yet help keep our community grow. There is room for expansion. We need to strive to keep our children here where Devine IS home.
And again there is more, but I went blank yet again, lol.

The road infrastructure is lacking. Not just out in the country either, but major in town roadways such as 173 in downtown intersection that floods anytime it rains, Washington street's large pot holes and various large whole, dips and rough patches throughout residential areas. There is also a lack of community information. Various meetings and governmental events take place that are not well publicized. The park off WindyKnoll could also use improvements.

condition of roads - city infrastructure. Need city leaders to be more aggressive towards positive growth - also need city to be more aggressive in code compliance towards properties that are in poor condition.

To begin the improvement, the focus must be turned toward becoming a Regional Retail Center!! There should be a fierce and deliberate effort to attract a Wal Mart Supercenter - before Lytle finishes taking all of our sales tax money!! Then, other retailers and restaurants etc will indeed follow!! We have amazing potential as a regional pull - and unbelievable opportunity along I 35!! Then the sales tax will provide the means to fix our infrastructure!! THINK BIG!! Go for it!!

WE NEED MORE COPS UP & DOWN DEVINE DR. PEOPLE DRIVE DOWN THIS ROAD SPEEDING EVERY DAY, AND IF IT CAN'T GET ANY WORSE, THE TRAFFIC INCREASES ON WEEKENDS.

In addition to encouraging economic growth via new business, Devine might look into opportunities for both more single structure family homes as well as multiple family housing. There seems to be more families looking for housing than there are decent and affordable rental properties.

We need to repair and upgrade facilities that we do have, such as our City Park. Unfortunately, the park is so full of stickers that children can not really play in the open areas where grass should be. The park needs to be maintained. Traffic is another issue in this area. Many individuals speed on streets bordering the park and this puts children, pets, etc in jepordy of being hit.

First off, I'm happy that the city created this website and Facebook page to communicate with the citizens.
I agree with comments made about people speeding down residential roads. There are many children in my neighborhood, and even with the "children at play" signs posted, there are still problems.
Encourage citizens to care about the place they call home. Clean up lots, streets, corners, and businesses. When I go walking I take plastic bags with me, one for trash, one for recycle and by the time I'm halfway done, the bags are filled. There shouldn't be that much new trash each day.
I'm not sure if Sadler is still a record holder in high school football stats, but when that did happen, it would've been great to see a banner hung over HWY 173 advertising that (I know that businesses or individuals would donate towards it, if the city could not bear the cost.) In Lytle, they've had banners for their state champion in cross country and track, and the Boyscout of the year.
I'm thankful for our Volunteer Fire Fighters. We need to make sure they are taken care of, they give our community their time, effort, and at times safety.
With the current economy, I like the additional housing idea. My family owns apartments in Lytle, and we receive 10+ calls a day looking for availability. A majority of them are due to the oil boom, and if they're willing to drive from Lytle to Pearsall, Dilley, or further south, Devine should be just as appealing. ( I have 4 acres near Ingram Ready Mix if there are any developers reading this! :) )
A beautification project that I've had in my idea book for awhile, but not sure how to propose it, is to paint a mural representative of Devine on the big stone slabs around the railroad bridge on 132. Have a contest perhaps where you can submit designs, then either hire a professional, or make it an art project for students of Devine HS.
The City of Somerset has an economic development team that their main priority is to help businesses succeed. I'm not sure if Devine has anything like this or not. If not, I think it would be beneficial to see about forming one. The better businesses are doing, the better the city does.
As someone making their living by being a small business, the idea of Wal-Mart is a bit scary. Hopefully it wouldn't hurt too many of us. If it's a super-center, I fear you can say goodbye to ALCO and Lowe's/ACE. They've been good to the community, so it would be sad to see them go out that way, but hopefully Wal-Mart could at least hire the employees to keep anyone from losing a job.
As for entertainment, I think a single (at least) screen theater could thrive here, based on how Hondo's has done. Young adult/Adult sports leagues please!
That's all I can think of for now. GO SPURS GO!!!

We need a major improvement to our schools. When my children attended the Intermediate, I was shocked to find out that tutoring wasn't available. My childrens' teachers never offered any extra help when they were struggling. I don't even send my children to a Devine school anymore. I homeschool now. They are doing much better. Still, I pay school taxes for a school that couldn't or wouldn't help my children.

In addition to a Walmart Supercenter, a movie theater on I35 would draw people from the whole region! We could support a theater with 3 to 6 screens. This would also attract restaurants to come here. And all those sales tax revenues might help us build some modern roads and infrastructure.... Hmmm.... What the heck are we waiting for? Lytle or Natalia to snag it first??

This town needs to do everything that it possibly can to being in large businesses. Small businesses need to realize that they are never going to be able to support the growth in this area anymore. They just don't being in enough tax revenue to support economic growth. Time to close up shop and go work at the Walmart, HEB, Home Depot or whatever else would be willing to come here. Your time has passed and its time to start looking at our future.
